Fu Jinqiang, Leshan People’s Hospital: The liver and gallbladder work together without changing the “gold”, and the health is protected by thinking of "strength"

2025/05/09 17:33 Origin:cced.cn

In 1998, Fu Jinqiang stepped onto the operating table for the first time. At that time, liver, gallbladder, and pancreatic surgeries were still in the era of "open surgery." Twenty-seven years have passed, and the battlefield under the scalpel has changed dramatically: minimally invasive techniques have reduced incisions to just a few millimeters, precision medicine has significantly lowered risks, and Fu Jinqiang has grown from a novice doctor to the chief physician of the Department of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery at Leshan People's Hospital.

"There is no end to medicine, and doctors must always be on the road of learning." He printed this sentence in his heart and engraved it into the details of every operation.

Life racing under the shadow of a lamp

It was an ordinary day. Fu Jinqiang, who had just finished work, hadn't even had time to wash off his fatigue when he was called for an emergency rescue call and rushed to another battlefield: "The district hospital is treating a worker who fell from a height; the liver has ruptured and is bleeding heavily, unable to be transferred!" Without any delay, Fu Jinqiang headed to the district hospital as quickly as possible and entered the operating room. The patient, who had fallen from a height, had over 2000 milliliters of blood in his abdominal cavity and was on the brink of collapse, with a very urgent situation. Fu Jinqiang worked alongside local doctors in a "life-saving tug-of-war" —— ligating the bleeding point, removing fragmented liver tissue, and racing against time to rebuild circulation... Finally, the waveform on the monitor stabilized, and the young patient's life was saved. In response to the family's gratitude, Fu Jinqiang simply waved his hand and said, "That's what doctors do......"

For over two decades, Fu Jinqiang has not only completed routine surgeries but also excelled in emergency and critical care cases. Another "battle" was equally heart-stopping: a car accident victim suffered from a massive rupture of the right lobe of the liver, a torn spleen, multiple fractures throughout the body, and hemorrhagic shock, creating an atmosphere of suffocation in the operating room. "Save lives first!" Fu Jinqiang led his team to quickly clear the fragmented liver tissue, suture the spleen's tear, and then apply pressure with gauze to stop the bleeding. Two hours later, the bleeding was finally under control, and orthopedic surgeons took over to treat the fractures. "The more critical the situation, the more we must act like' Pillar of the Sea.'" This is his advice to young doctors, and his confidence as the "Pillar of the Sea" comes from years of solid training and fearless mental fortitude. "As a doctor, the knife in your hand is a life-saving tool; there can be no room for panic," Fu Jinqiang said.

Solve the problem of "impossible surgery"

Aunt Zhang, in her fifties, suffered from abdominal pain for five years. An examination revealed that her pancreatic duct was filled with stones, and the tail of her pancreas had atrophied like a dry branch. In the past, this condition could only be treated with a "total pancreatectomy" —— removing the pancreas, part of the stomach, duodenum, common bile duct, and spleen, followed by gastrointestinal and biliary-enteric anastomosis. Postoperative complications were numerous, and the risk was extremely high, potentially causing severe damage to the patient's quality of life.

Fu Jinjiang and all the doctors in his department thoroughly discussed and, based on the principle of patient benefit, formulated the optimal surgical plan of "total pancreatectomy with duodenal preservation." On the day of surgery, he meticulously peeled away the pancreas under laparoscopy, removing the stone-filled pancreatic tissue intact, like clearing riverbed silt, while carefully avoiding surrounding blood vessels and nerves, thus preserving the duodenum and spleen. Seven hours later, the surgery was successful. Aunt Zhang had no complications after the operation and could drink porridge the next day. "I never thought I could eat normally again!" She held Fu Jinjiang's hand and wiped away her tears.

"In the past, it was about 'cutting the lesion', but now it is about 'preserving function'." Fu Jinqiang attributed this change to technological iterations. ——3D fluorescence laparoscopy makes the view clearer, and ultrasonic knife makes the separation more accurate, but the most important thing is that "doctors need to have a more precise map of the human body in their mind than the instruments".

A strict teacher has no "dull knife"

As deputy director of the department and director of teaching, Fu jinqiang has two sets of "surgical knives": one for curing diseases and the other for "treating doctors".

He promotes comprehensive coverage of liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen disease diagnosis and treatment in his department: routinely performing laparoscopic resection of liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen tumors, minimally invasive three-port surgery to address gallbladder stones throughout the entire biliary system, conversion therapy for unresectable liver and pancreatic cancers, and minimally invasive ablation for liver and pancreatic cancers. "Patients no longer have to travel far for complex and difficult conditions; this is the significance of discipline development."

For teaching the younger generation, Fu Jinqiang is even more passionate than ever. In his view, before technology, a doctor must first cultivate their "heart."  "Without the initial intention to respect and protect life, no matter how good the technology is, it remains just a cold machine." This is a phrase he often reminds his students of. In his teaching, he places great emphasis on the management and feedback of teaching quality, making sure to clearly understand which students have grasped the concepts, which ones have mastered them, and where there are still gaps that need to be addressed. He ensures every student understands their learning progress and technical proficiency because he must be a strict teacher and maintain high standards for medical professionals: "There can be no 'good enough.'"

With 27 years in medicine, what Jin Qiang finds most unforgettable is not the banners and letters of gratitude, but the patient's exclamation upon discharge: "I'm cured." From open surgery to minimally invasive revolution, from saving lives to "guarding lives," Fu Jinqiang has always believed that the ultimate goal of medicine is not to conquer diseases with technology, but to illuminate the darkest moments of life with compassion.
